What are the three memory systems in the stages-of-memory model? Describe the characteristics of each—include: a) storage duration, b) capacity, c) manner of storage, and d) how information is lost

What will be an ideal response?

* The three systems are sensory, short-term, and long-term.
* Sensory memory stores a very brief image (.50 to 1 second) of all the stimuli present at a particular moment and therefore has quite a large storage capacity; information that is not stored in higher brain centers is displaced by incoming information.
* Short-term memory lasts for 10 to 20 seconds; between 5 and 9 pieces (7+2) of information can be stored in our consciousness; unless information is rehearsed it becomes weaker and fades away while information is also displaced when room must be made for incoming information.
* Long-term memory has a very large, relatively permanent storage capacity in the higher brain centers; memory is stored by rehearsing it in a number of different ways and can be lost by simple fading or interference.
