Species diversity is decreasing on the planet and has been identified as a major problem by many ecologists. Therefore, it is important for scientists to identify habitats that support diversity and to reconstruct environments for maximum diversity. Describe an environment that would support a high species richness
What will be an ideal response?
The best answers should describe an environment that has adequate resources needed for diversity and interactions between species that can increase species numbers. Resources would include ample solar energy, water, temperatures and soils that would support maximum plant growth and subsequently greater animal diversity. Competitive interactions that lead to resource partitioning can also increase diversity by potentially creating more niches. Predator/prey relationships can also increase diversity because predators can control prey species that would otherwise increase and out-compete other species.

Removing individuals during a competition experiment may have direct and indirect effects on the environment that are not intended or understood by the investigators and that can influence the response of the remaining species
