Why can't people speed up their basal metabolic rate (BMR) with exercise or with supplements?

The level of thyroxine hormone, produced by the thyroid gland, has the most influence on the BMR. People with higher levels of thyroxine have higher BMRa. There is little anyone can do to change the level of thyroxine production by the thyroid gland.
Moderate-intensity exercise will increase the amount of calories used during the activity but not immediately afterwards. People can increase energy expenditure by being more active. Over time, an active lifestyle increases the amount of lean tissue (muscle) somewhat, which could increase their BMR as well.
Foods do not speed up the BMR. The body does use about 5-10% of the daily calories to process foods (thermic effect of food) but this will not lead to an increase in the BMR. Supplements that claim to increase the BMR do not work and can have serious side effects as well.
