Demonstrate the technique for utilizing the Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR)
What will be an ideal response?
When acquiring the health history of a patient, it is important for the dental auxiliary to research and record any information about a patient’s medications, calling attention to any side effects of the medications and the conditions for which they are prescribed. The Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR), compiled annually, contains information provided by the drug manufacturers about a large variety of medications. Complete instructions on how to use the PDR are provided at the beginning of each of its sections. The product identification section provides pictures of a wide variety of medications, allowing the auxiliary to visually identify any medications a patient may bring with them to the dental office. The dental auxiliary should become familiar with the PDR, and should utilize it regularly. It is also extremely important to have an up-to-date PDR, because medications change at such a rapid pace.
