How do high fertility rates negatively impact development?
What will be an ideal response?
High fertility and rapid population growth slow development. High population puts a lot of pressure on resources and governments to provide public goods like schools and roads. Population also stresses the environment particularly for increased agriculture or fuel. Large families also cost parents a lot of money and they usually cannot or do not save for the future. The quantity-quality trade off occurs in large families and parents must sacrifice quality child raising practices when there are too many children. Also the demographic transition theory suggests declining populations are part of modernization.
