Explain the concept of self-efficacy in relation to social cognitive theory (SCT)

A key construct of SCT is self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is an individual's perceived confidence that he or she is capable of carrying out a specific action. The belief that one can overcome obstacles and stick with a task is vital to any sort of behavior change. Someone who believes in his or her capabilities is usually able to overcome temporary failures or setbacks, whereas individuals with low self-efficacy are more likely to give up or settle for results that are below their original goals. A person with a strong sense of self-efficacy is able to visualize positive outcomes, which in turn increases his or her motivation to persevere with the target behavior. As a result, self-efficacy can be the missing link between knowing what to do and being able to perform the skill in a given situation. People must have the skill and think that they can use the skill before they can use it effectively. Programs teach and shape skills through education and modeling, but an individual's personal judgment about using that skill is just as important (if not more so) to "real-world" behavioral action. Self-efficacy is unique in that it has a variety of documented relationships to behavioral action.?
