ANS: The outer layer (zone I) has parallel fibers suited to the function of reducing friction between
contacting surfaces. The middle layer (zone II) is a lattice-work arrangement, allowing this layer to
change shape to absorb shock and squeeze fluid in and out. The inner layer (zone III) contains
fibers that are also aligned perpendicular to the bone surface to secure the tissue into the calcified
layer of cartilage (zone IV).
