What are the diet recommendations for adolescent athletes?

What will be an ideal response?

Athletes have both increased calorie and fluids needs. Calories are needed to fuel the body as it burns calories during exercise and also to repair muscle. Fluids are needed to replace losses from sweating and breathing. Pre-exercise meals should be highest in carbohydrate with moderate protein and low fat and fiber content. Post-exercise meals should be a balance of protein and carbohydrate with ample fluids. During exercise, a snack is not necessary unless the duration of the exercise will be more than 60 minutes. If this is the case, the snack should provide 30—60 grams of carbohydrate per hour. Water should be the primary source of fluids. Special sports drinks are not necessary for exercise lasting less than 60 minutes.
