Identify the fastest-growing ethnic minority in the United States today. What is their current proportion in the U.S. population, and what is predicted for their population in 2050? In what ways may U.S. society change by that point?
What will be an ideal response?
Hispanic Americans or Latinos, who currently make up about 12.5% of the U.S. population. By 2050 it is predicted that they will make up about 24% of the population. We will be more of a multiracial nation than we are now, but we will not be truly multicultural if "white privilege" still exists. It is likely that bilingualism will increase, as many immigrants speak their "native" language and Spanish is especially popular. At present 23 states have laws declaring English as their official language; this may change along with the growing Hispanic population.
