Assess the limitations of self-report studies as a measure of police misconduct.
What will be an ideal response?
Self-report studies take two basic forms, one form asks officers to self-report on incidents of misconduct by coworkers and whether they reported their coworkers misconduct. The major limitation here is that it relies on officers being truthful. In addition, it is hard to use these numbers to draw conclusions about police nationwide. The other type of self-report survey asks officers their perception of the wrongfulness of actions in hypothetical situations. The major limitation with this type of survey is that it relies on perceptions, and these perceptions may not reflect reality. Additionally, this type of survey also may have issues with officer truthfulness and the applicability of results to police nationwide.
