A footboard is a device that is placed between the mattress and the bed to keep the patient's toes from pointing downward. If the toes point down, the muscle in the calf of the leg tightens and a deformity will result. It does not take long for footdrop to develop. It will be difficult for the patient to walk or stand when he gets out of bed. A footboard must be padded. A pillow can be folded lengthwise and placed between the mattress and the end of the bed in place of a footboard.
