A reflex mediated by the muscle spindle in response to lengthening of a skeletal muscle; also called myotatic reflex. There are two kinds of stretch reflexes: tonic and phasic

A gradual elongation in muscle length elicits a tonic stretch reflex, which results in a slow muscular contraction. A quick stretch of a muscle results in a phasic stretch reflex, which triggers protective contractions that prevent the muscle from overstretching and tearing.
