If the upper motor neuron originating in the right primary motor cortex is damaged prior to arriving at the medullary pyramids, predict the impact on motor control
What will be an ideal response?
The upper motor neurons of each cerebral hemisphere control the motor activity of the opposite side of the body via neurons of the PNS called lower motor neurons (which are responsible for executing the movements). At the level of the medullary pyramids the upper motor neurons in the corticospinal tracts decussate. Thus, the upper motor neurons originating in the right primary cortex control the left side of the body. Patients with damage to the right primary motor cortex of the brain will show loss of function of muscles on the left side of the body.
