Stare decisis is the doctrine of prior precedents. The Latin meaning of these words is "let the prior decision stand." Under stare decisis, judges in current cases follow whenever possible the interpretation of law determined by judges in prior cases. This doctrine arose from the desire for certainty and predictability in the law. One important advantage of stare decisis was people became secure in their right of property.
