Explore the history and development of the YMCA. Was it able to effect change without first being in crisis? If the latter, was internally constructed or externally imposed?
What will be an ideal response?
Like many other charitable organizations the YMCA has reinvented itself out of necessity to survive.
One aspect of this has been the need to generate adequate funds to continue employing professional
and other staff. To this end it has identified and established a variety of paid-for services. The
alternative would have been to accept that its original mission was no longer sustainable if it relied
only on volunteers. Indeed it can be argued that in its traditional form society no longer required the
YMCA. So the answer to the question posed is that it has effected radical change because crisis was
internally constructed, although the external financial pressures were real enough. The drive towards
commercial solutions, common to many charities, might lead the cynic to conclude that for many
charities the endgame is survival either as an end in itself or to provide worthwhile employment for
their staff. Whilst that may be an unduly harsh assessment, the reality today is that the income of
many voluntary enterprises has come to depend to a greater or lesser degree on public funding from
national or local government. In that sense they have become an agent of government rather than
genuinely autonomous voluntary enterprises. For this reason it raises questions about whether the
coalition government (2010-) has been realistic in its stated belief that public sector cutbacks can be
substantially mitigated through the efforts of voluntary social enterprises. The YMCA demonstrates
that it is possible to create a successful not-for-profit organisation that draws much of its income
from paid-for services.
