termed schemes. As children mature, these schemes become more complex. For
example, consider how an infant may engage in functional play with a toy, but
increasingly engage in actions with the toy beyond its intended use. Piaget assumed
that adaptation of schemes occurred through the process of assimilation and
accommodation. Assimilation is the active integration of new information in existing
schemes, for example, a child may initially call all men, "Daddy". However, with
enough experience, the child will alter this scheme through a process termed,
accommodation.
