What is the study sample you could employ to evaluate practice in a familiar agency? What is the study population for this study? Can you generalize your study findings to the study population on a scientific basis? Explain why. What information would you need in order to generalize your findings on a logical basis?
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Perhaps this will be a study of the clients receiving a given service such as the case management services of the child welfare program. The sample may be the 17 clients currently receiving this service by a given social worker (maybe the student). The study population could be all the clients currently receiving this service by this agency. In this situation, you do not have a random sample, so the results cannot be generalized on a scientific basis. Information needed for logical generalization would be the extent of similarities between the sample and the population on relevant characteristics of the clients.
Learning Objective: 8-8: Determine if the results of an evaluative study can be generalized from the study sample to a designated study population on a scientific basis and a logical basis.
