Identify and explain the different characteristics of blood in the stool and what those signs mean

What will be an ideal response?

Answer: If the blood in the stool is bright red, the bleeding originated from the distal end of the colon, the rectum. Streaks of red blood can indicate bleeding hemorrhoids. This symptom can also indicate cancer of the rectum. Dark blood may appear in the stools, giving them a dark, tarry appearance, known as melena. This blood was altered as it passed through the digestive tract, so it originated from the stomach or duodenum. A bleeding ulcer or cancer of the stomach may be indicated by melena. Certain medications (those containing iron, for instance) can also give this tarry appearance to the stools. Blood may not be apparent to the naked eye, but a chemical test can show its presence. This is referred to as occult blood.
