In infective endocarditis, what grows in and around the heart valves that causes scar tissue on the valves and allows blood to flow back into the previous chamber?
a. vegetations c. abscesses
b. fibrinous plaques d. ulcerations
A
Infective endocarditis is caused by bacteria, fungi, or virus. As the microorganisms invade the valves, they form fibrinous substances called vegetations. The vegetations cause scar tissue on the valves resulting in hard, brittle valves that do not close properly and allow blood to flow back into the previous chamber. The valve is said to be insufficient. Sometimes the vegetations cause the valve flaps to grow together, resulting in a narrowing of the opening. This is called a valvular stenosis.
