A procedure known as median sternotomy is used to cut through the sternum to open the thoracic cavity. Determine the portions of the sternum that must be cut, from superior to inferior, during this procedure. To which bone(s) or cartilage(s) does each

portion of the sternum articulate?

What will be an ideal response?

During a median sternotomy, the sternum may be cut lengthwise from the superior manubrium, then the body, and to the inferior xiphoid process. The manubrium articulates with each clavicle and the costal cartilages of the first ribs. The cartilages of the second ribs articulate where the manubrium and body meet. The lateral edges of the body have notches where the cartilages from the third through seventh ribs meet. No bones or cartilages articulate with the xiphoid process.
