Why is it important to have an educational understanding of the meaning of "family?"

The "legal" definition of a family might be considered that of the U.S. Census Bureau which collects demographic data; however that definition may be too limited from an educational perspective. According to the Census, a family is a group of two or more people related by birth, marriage, or adoption who reside together. The authors of the textbook suggest a broader definition in which a family is two or more people who regard themselves to be a family and who carry out the functions that families typically perform. It does not matter if the people are related, married, or even if they live together. In reality, any combination and number of people may have an influence on the lives of students, and it would be foolish of educators to ignore the effect on a child's education of someone who may not technically be a family member. Teachers should expect to encounter a vast diversity of families and not expect to communicate only with the mothers of their students, even if this happens most of the time. In fact, if the parents of a child are not communicating with them, teachers should make an effort to find out if there are other important adults in the child's life who can communicate with them.
