Sabotage is damaging or destroying government property to hinder preparation for war and defense during national emergencies. Espionage is spying or gathering intelligence for the enemy. The U.S. Code separates espionage into two crimes: espionage during peace and espionage during war. Both crimes require the intent or knowledge to harm the United States. Sabotage is the destruction of property whereas espionage is the dissemination of sensitive information to an enemy of the United States. Both are intent on causing damage to the United States.
