What is the purpose of the exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) monitor, and on what vehicles is it found?

What will be an ideal response?

OBD II requires that the PCM perform an exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) monitor on vehicles equipped with an EGR system. The monitor tests and verifies the operation of the EGR system and will illuminate the MIL if a fault is detected with any component in the system during two consecutive drive cycles that could result in emission levels exceeding 1.5 times the FTP standard for the vehicle. The purpose of the requirement is to limit the production of NOX and HC emissions.
