What steps might be taken to assess and improve a literacy program?

What will be an ideal response?

A number of steps can be taken to improve a literacy program.
• Use time efficiently,
• Provide for individual differences, set up intervention programs, monitor progress, & use reading to close achievement gaps.
•Involve parents
• Work with other professionals,
•Assess reading data to monitor and make improvements (scores on state tests and criterion-referenced tests, informal classroom assessments, progress monitoring and benchmark assessments, student-work samples, and portfolios).
• Assess instructional data to evaluate procedures (time records, lesson plans, observational notes, sample assignments, results from observation protocols).
• Review observation notes from the classroom teacher, administrators, and literary coaches.
•Critique materials, techniques, and activities to decide which are effective and which are not.
• Incorporate standardized evaluation kits or programs such as ELLCO (evaluates observations in lower grades) and CLEP (evaluates materials and classrooms in
upper grades).
•Make suggestions for improvement in terms of improving students' learning rather than in terms of improving or changing the teacher.
