Identify and explain two ways, as described in the book, in which the value of particular lives may be determined.

What will be an ideal response?

Varies. Students choose two of the following. A standard method of making such judgments involves discounted future earnings, meaning that the life of the individual is worth whatever the individual could have earned in the course of his or her working life, discounted to present value. Another method of assigning value to lives for the purpose of cost-benefit analysis uses the size of awards to plaintiffs in legal cases involving negligence or malpractice that resulted in loss of life. One can also use a method somewhat similar to the “willingness-to-pay” criterion: In theory, individuals would be willing to pay almost anything to preserve their own lives and the lives of their loved ones, but individuals engage in risky behavior and risky occupations all the time, and when they do, they make a subjective statement about the value of their lives.
