Discuss the five stages of Galotti's (2002) model of general decision making. Discuss an example to illustrate all five stages.

What will be an ideal response?

The five stages are as follows:
Setting goals. Goals are mental representations of desired states of affairs.
Gathering information. Once you have set your goals, you need to acquire information necessary to make the decision.
Structuring the decision. Next, we need to organize the information in a way that will be useful for making the decision.
Making a final choice. After using the information to make comparisons, it is time to choose an option.
Evaluation. Interpreting and evaluating our choices are important aspects of decision making.
Student examples will vary. A sample follows. My goal is to decide where to go on vacation next summer. I will think of three options and gather information on costs, types of lodging, and available activities at each place. Then I will rank each place within each category and use composite scores to make my final choice. After I return from my vacation, I will journal about how much I enjoyed it and whether I want to ever return.
