The separate but equal doctrine resulted from the Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896. In a 7 to 1 ruling, the Court declared that separate but equal facilities did not violate the Fourteenth Amendment's equal protection clause. Under this doctrine, the Court upheld state laws mandating separation of the races in schools and all public accommodations such as businesses, transport, restaurants, hotels, swimming pools, and other recreational facilities.
