Describe how you might go about developing rapport with a child, if you were tasked with conducting an interview to determine if child sexual abuse had occurred.
What will be an ideal response?
First, I would introduce myself, and let the child know I was there to talk with them that day. I would ask the child how they were feeling, about their day, what they would like to do for fun, and maybe let them know I liked some of the same activities. I might tell a knock-knock joke depending on the child’s age. I would also let the child know that I knew it wasn’t always fun to answer questions or talk with adults, and that they could take a break whenever they wanted in order to let the child know that I was sensitive to their needs and had empathy for the situation.
