What are the different ways we can sample from a population? Explain.

What will be an ideal response?

Two ways we can sample from a population are probability samples and convenience samples. Probability samples are ones that are chosen such that everyone in the population has a specific, pre-determined chance of being selected at random for the sample. In other words, probability determines how likely any one individual is to be chosen for the sample. Convenience samples (also called purposive samples), on the contrary, do not allow individuals to be chosen with a known probability from the population. Instead, individuals are chosen from the population based on convenience of their availability for the sample. Thus, probability samples are more likely to be representative of the population, but convenience samples are much easier to select and are often used in cases where researchers want to learn about a very large population.
