In what ways has the smartphone created a mental health crisis among teens?
What will be an ideal response?
In the United States, the amount of time teens spent in face-to-face social activities decreased rapidly coinciding with the increasing use of cell phones and increasing unhappiness. While there may be many sources of unhappiness, use of social media and decreasing social activities appear to have independent effects. One of the mechanisms is increasing loneliness. Teens are spending more time alone in their rooms and on social media. When they do go out with friends, they remain active on social media. Not receiving affirmation of one’s online posts brings angst to teenagers (Twenge 2017). Social media also provides an outlet for bullying.
