Ans: Answers to this question will vary but should include elements of the following: These forms of assessment are seen as more fair to the country’s diverse students and as better determining what they know and are able to do than are traditional forms of assessment. Alternative assessments are designed to assess the application of knowledge and may include such formats as performance, extended response (e.g., exhibitions and oral defenses), and extended tasks in which students might be engaged in decision making, investigating, experimenting, problem solving, and researching. Alternative assessments best measure conceptual learning and higher-order thinking. The evaluation tools that are used most often to measure learning are rubrics or assessment lists.
