When creating a historiography, you follow many of the same steps as any research project. The steps can be outlined in the order below. It is important to note that when using primary sources, you must determine whether a document or artifact is authentic, and then determine the accuracy of the meaning in the material. Tertiary sources can be useful to help locate and verify secondary and primary sources.
1. Identify an idea, topic, or research question.
2. Conduct a background literature review.
3. Refine the research idea and questions.
4. Determine that historical methods will be the data-collection process.
5. Identify and locate primary and secondary data sources.
6. Evaluate the authenticity and accuracy of source materials.
7. Analyze the data and develop a narrative exposition of the findings.
