Sound waves are collected by the outer ear and funneled into the middle ear where vibrations are transferred to bones that carry the vibrations to the inner ear. In the inner ear, the cochlea's hair cells vibrate and transmit the vibrations to the auditory nerve which carries the information to the temporal lobe, coordinating with other brain functions to perceive and integrate what we have heard.
