Environmental factors can play an important role in how well a child is able to learn in the classroom environment. For example, acoustics, or sound, can shape a learning environment in negative ways when excessive noise is present. This noise can be distracting for the child and inhibit his or her ability to hear and comprehend lessons. Excessive noise can also prevent appropriate and effective social interactions with one’s teachers and peers. Lighting and color can also have direct impact on learning. Children tend to feel more comfortable and learn better in lower lighting and softer colors. Bright lights and bright or dark colors can be distracting to children and prevent them from maintaining appropriate attention to the tasks or lessons at hand. Finally, temperature can negatively influence learning when it’s too hot or too cold in the classroom. Children who are too hot or too cold are focused more on physical discomfort than on completing required classroom tasks or activities.
