Investors have considered Africa an unfriendly business environment due to poverty, corruption, and low quality of life.Recently, this attitude has changed, with Africa becoming more attractive to investors. What factors have contributed to the turnabout in African business opportunities?

Sub-Saharan Africa not long ago was the world's worst region for conducting business because of corruption and bureaucratic obstacles, but with many conflicts ending and better economic practices, the region's business climate is much improved. The number of significant conflicts was cut in half between the 1990s and 2000s. Governance is improving as corruption is being tackled. The so-called "cheetah generation" of new African leaders is more energetic and creative in business and in policy making than the retiring generation of post-colonial leaders. The "peace dividend" and improved governance is an attractive mix of factors that has led to a surge in foreign direct investment (FDI).
