What do the interrupt request line (IRQ) and I/O address resources on a computer used for?

What will be an ideal response?

The interrupt request line is a channel for communication with the CPU. A typical computer contains a limited number of IRQ lines. Devices such as video cards, disk drives, and sound cards use dedicated IRQs to communicate with the processor. Each component also needs reserved memory addresses for I/O operations. Resource conflicts can sometimes occur when a network adapter, a new SCSI device adapter, or some other hardware is automatically configured.
