Discuss Piaget's classic object hiding tasks and the concepts of object permanence and AB

search errors. Why did the work of Baillargeon and colleagues ( 1987; 1991 ) cast doubt on
Piaget's original findings?

What will be an ideal response?

In Piaget's classic paradigm, infants were shown an object that was then put under a
napkin in view of the baby. Before 8 months of age, Piaget demonstrated that infants
would not look for the object, that is, they lack object permanence or the understanding
that there is an integrity to objects once they leave one's field of vision. However, infants
older than 8 months will solve such simple object hiding tasks. This ability still remains
somewhat crude from 8-12 months, for example, infants of this age range often make
AB search errors. For instance, the infant may correctly locate an object under the
napkin (Location A); however, if the researcher switches the location of the object
(Location B), the infant will continue to look for it in the original location (A).
Baillargeon and colleagues casted doubt on the time frame of this cognitive process. For
example, they noted that infants as young as 3 months of age stare longer at moving
objects that supposedly have passed through barriers. These researchers theorize that
the infants are somewhat "surprised" over this impossible event and must understand
the integrity of objects. Thus, they concluded that Piaget underestimated when infants
develop object permanence.
