ANSWER: Adolescents with intellectual disabilities need opportunities for interaction with peers
without disabilities (other than caregivers), access to community events, sustained
social relationships, and involvement in choices that affect their lives. Research indicates
that people with intellectual disabilities can work in community employment if adequate
training and support are provided. The student should have the opportunity to make
informed choices about what jobs he or she wants to do and where he or she wants to
work. The student should receive employment training in community settings prior to
graduation from high school. Employment training should focus on work opportunities
present in the local area where the individual currently lives. The focus of the
employment training should be on specific job training as the student approaches
graduation. Collaboration between the school and adult service agencies must be part
of the employment-training program.
