List the symptoms and potential causes of mallet finger. Then describe the appropriate treatment

Mallet finger may be caused by a direct blow to an outstretched finger, tearing the tendon along with a piece of the bone that the tendon is attached to (avulsion fracture). Mallet finger may also result when a finger is caught in the mesh of a jersey while the athlete is in motion. The athlete will not be able to actively extend the injured finger. The athlete will have point tenderness at the site of the fracture or ligament damage. The athlete should be referred to a physician for further evaluation and to check for a possible fracture.
