What are the similarities and differences between illness anxiety disorder and conversion disorder?

What will be an ideal response?

Students' examples may vary.

The answer should contain the following information:

Both illness anxiety disorder and conversion disorder are forms of somatic symptom disorder. People with illness anxiety disorder have a constant fear of illness and a preoccupation with their health. These individuals believe that everyday aches and pains are symptoms of a dreaded disease. Unlike illness anxiety disorder, in which there is no physical problem, conversion disorders involve an actual physical disturbance, such as the inability to see or hear or to move an arm or leg. However, the cause of the physical disturbance is purely psychological; there is no biological reason for the problem. Some of Freud's classic cases involved conversion disorders.
