The shape of the population in developing countries will resemble a pyramid that is swelling in the upper regions as infant mortality rates decline and the number of individuals living into their 80s, 90s, and 100s increases. While there is growing concern by both that the cost of programs to support older adults will be severely strained, such as national health care programs, developed countries have greater economic resources available to meet these needs. Additionally, this situation may cause intergenerational conflict as larger numbers of people will be supported by programs fueled by smaller numbers of younger taxpayers.
