If you looked at an electron microscope picture of a true bacterium and an archaebacterium, you probably couldn't tell which was which. Yet they are classified into separate kingdoms, and more recently, in separate domains. In what ways are these organisms fundamentally different?

What will be an ideal response?

The principle eukaryotic structures visible in an electron micrograph are the cell wall, plasma membrane, ribosomes, and DNA of the nucleoid. While all forms of life use the same genetic code, the ribosomal RNA of the different domains diverge sharply. Completely different lipids construct the plasma membranes of each type of prokaryote. The cell walls of each kind of organism are constructed of different macromolecules (which incidentally differ from these in the cell wall of fungi and plants as well). Finally, their metabolic pathways and preferred habitats are generally quite different, although the habitat ranges of both are wide enough to overlap.

Consider the structure of a trophic pyramid when answering the following questions: Why are shrimp more abundant than whales in the ocean?

A. Whales reproduce more slowly, so maintain small population sizes. B. More energy is available to primary consumers, and thus the biomass/abundance of primary consumers is greater than that of secondary consumers. C. Whales are warm-blooded secondary consumers and lose more energy as heat, therefore their level on a trophic pyramid is smaller (more narrow) than for shrimp (primary consumers). D. The levels of the trophic pyramid represent the percentage of primary producers that make up a consumer's diet. Whales eat less of the primary producers, so their level on a trophic pyramid is smaller than the level for shrimp.
