Compare how the body responds to cold and heat exposure
What will be an ideal response?
Cold exposure induces heat production by increased muscle tone, shivering, and non-shivering thermogenesis. It induces decreased heat loss by causing vasoconstriction of blood vessels to the skin and postural changes to reduce exposed surfaces to heat loss. Heat exposure causes decreased heat production by decreasing muscle tone. It induces increased heat loss by vasodilating blood vessels to the skin and sweating. There are also behavioral changes associated with each condition. In cold exposure there is an increase in voluntary exercise (pacing, running in place) and finding warm clothing. In heat exposure there is a decrease in voluntary movement and finding cool clothing.
