Define flotation and describe how it works
What will be an ideal response?
Answer should include points such as the following:
Flotation is a method for measuring the density of glass.
In flotation, a standard/reference glass particle is immersed in a liquid whose composition is carefully adjusted until the object remains suspended in the liquid medium. At this point, the standard/reference glass and the liquid have the same density. Glass chips of approximately the same size and shape as the standard/reference glass are now added to the liquid for comparison. If both the unknown and the standard/reference particles remain suspended in the liquid, their densities are equal to each other and to that of the liquid. Particles of different densities will either sink or float, depending on whether they are more or less dense than the liquid and the standard/reference sample.
