What is the purpose of the exclusionary rule?
What will be an ideal response?
The purpose of the exclusionary rule is 2-fold. First, it is designed to ensure that illegally obtained evidence is not used against a defendant in court. Second, it is supposed to deter unlawful police conduct in searches and seizures. The logic is that if police know that the evidence obtained will not be admissible in court if it is obtained illegally, they will follow all applicable rules of searches and seizures to ensure that the evidence is available to be used as evidence in court.
