Ways to improve as a critical thinker include learning to ask how individual stories relate to bigger issues; always questioning whether sources are knowledgeable, reliable and free from bias; learning to abandon story angles when they no longer work and then try a new approach; and constantly asking what the readers need to know to understand a story.
