Learning disability is the number one category of children served in special needs

programs.

What are the criteria for the diagnosis of a learning disability? What new method of
evaluating children at risk for learning disability has been developed?
What will be an ideal response?

Learning disability is a category which includes a variety of cognitive processing
difficulties. In order to be diagnosed with a learning disability, the child has:
1. Achievement 2 years below age/grade expectations.
2. Difficulty mastering specific academic skill or skills, most commonly reading.
3. IQ test score/intelligence is normal.
4. No sensory or physical handicaps.
5. No other diagnosis, such as depression.
New method employs MRI functioning analysis – compares child to other children who have and
have not developed a learning disability. The MRI is done before school entrance so that risk potential
can be determined early.
