Discuss the evolution of blogging, its impact on public relations today, and potential impact in the future

Blogs are an online diary that, in effect, provide a chronological log of thought published on a Web page. Known also as either a Web log or Weblog, it was initially used by so-called "fringe media." More recently, it has been embraced by professional communicators, including members of the mainstream print and electronic media. They both encourage and enhance communication among various publics on a variety of subjects. Because the public has largely begun to turn away from corporations and their "ad speak," blogs have become a source for opinion and information on products and services. The blog phenomenon is an important bellwether for the field of public relations, reflecting its potential as a new so-called "third-party endorser" of products and services. Like so much of the social media, their potential value to public relations must be scrutinized, and practitioners should proceed with caution.
