What are the patterns of self-stimulation that have been observed from infancy through adolescence?
What will be an ideal response?
Masturbation is a normal, natural form of sexual expression in infancy. Infants have been observed fondling their own genitals. Orgasms from self-stimulation are possible at this early age, although before puberty boys are not capable of ejaculation.
During childhood, more and more children gain experience with masturbation. Generally boys start masturbating earlier than girls, a trend that is even more pronounced in adolescence. Boys and girls tend to learn about masturbation in different ways. Typically boys are told about it by their male peers, they see their peers doing it, or they read about it; girls most frequently learn about masturbation through accidental self-discovery.
According to the Kinsey data, there is a sharp increase in the incidence of masturbation for boys during adolescence, between the ages of 13 and 15. Many girls also begin masturbating during adolescence, however, in comparison to boys, they do not begin to do so until later. Thus the increase in their masturbation behavior is much more gradual than for boys and continues past adolescence.
