PLS-SEM is becoming popular in business and marketing research because of the following advantages:
1. The measurement requirements are very flexible and it works well with all types of data, including nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio data.
2. The method is nonparametric so it can be applied to data that is not normally distributed.
3. Solutions can be obtained with both small and large samples. Depending on the complexity of the model, a sample size of 50 or so respondents is often acceptable.
4. Solutions are possible with very complex models based on 100+ questions and many constructs.
5. Many types of analysis are possible, such as group comparisons, mediation, moderation, and importance-performance analysis.
6. The SmartPLS software is very user friendly-just draw a picture of your path model, import your data, and use point-and-click and drag-and-drop motions to run the software. The output includes many assessment tools, including Cronbach's Alpha reliability, validity testing, and explained variance (R2).
